Tortillas to Totems: Every Day an Adventure, Book 4

Sam Manicom's dynamic fourth book is an enticing yet frequently challenging motorcycle journey across the dramatic landscapes of Mexico, the United States and Canada. Sam's partner Birgit is no longer a novice motorcyclist - riding through southern Africa and South America turned her into a rider capable of facing any challenge. But Sam was worried.

As they arrived into North America they had been travelling around the world by motorcycle for six years and he was beginning to think that North America was going to be easy; too easy in fact. Were all the challenges of travel in the developing world countries going to be missing? Sam couldn't have been more wrong.

Samuel Johnson wrote, "The use of travelling is to regulate imagination by reality and instead of thinking how things may be, to see them how they are." After all, aren't these some of the main reasons for going travelling? To experience as many different things and ways of life as possible? To discover new and wonderful things, but also to have preconceived ideas challenged.

This true-life story has more twists and turns than a Rocky Mountain Pass, and more surprises than anyone could expect. As it did them, at times it could challenge you too. Woven into this surprising story are canyons, cowboys, idyllic beaches, bears, mountains, Californian Vineyards, gun-toting policemen with grudges, glaciers, exploding volcanoes, dodgy border crossings, and some of the most stunning open roads that a traveler could ever wish to see.

A gripping rollercoaster of a journey across North America. Sam and Birgit are thrown into a completely new set of challenges. These adventures bring alive the history, geography, human relationships and the pure joy of the open road.

After a seven year absence of motorcycles in my life, I started restoring a 40 year old GS750. The adventure motorcycle bug has bit me big time. I heard Sam on an Adventure Rider Radio podcast and immediately downloaded this Kindle book. What a thought-provoking and open-minded writer, storyteller and traveller. Sam not only portrays a great story, his gift with the written word brings our world to life and this reader felt like he was along for every mile (or kilometer!).I appreciated Sam's opinion and insight across many subjects, political and otherwise. I've had the good fortune to experience cultures on the other side of the world and Sam was spot on without coming off as too many arrogant writers do these days. Thanks Sam, I can't wait to read the three other volumes. (I started with book four now I'm going back to 1-3)

The third of his books I have read. Too much anti-American political opinion in the first half. Not enough about travel by motorcycle. Too much wasted time when they could have gotten to Alaska and many other interesting places in the Eastern US. Yes, there are many Americans that know little about world culture but there are many that have traveled extensively and are enlightened.

I got a connection to Sam through Facebook, and decided to give one his books a try. I started with this one because I am currently living in Costa Rica, but I'm a US Citizen.I enjoyed the book so much that I am beginning to read Distant Suns. I'm working my way backward through the series. Not only do I love riding along with Sam on these adventures, but I often use what I read the night before as a status on Facebook, and I often get a comment from Sam! You don't need to friend Sam to get a great experience from reading these books. After a year of experiencing life in another culture, it is awesome to be able to travel the world through Sam's eyes and words.

Really enjoyed the book great narrative imagery. This is the first book I read of the series, but had no issue picking up characters and storylines. I'm looking forward to the other books.

Just finished Sams book Tortillas To Totems. What an amazing journey. Sam writes in an easy conversational manner that keeps the reader glued to the page and wanting more. A true adventure in every sense and a romantic journey of discovery. The places the people, the emotions, the pain and the joy of travelling overland, are all expressed with an honesty and a humility that endears the reader. One must read all four books in this series. Highly recommended.

Just got on to this book on the plane back to California. This may be the first time I wanted the plane ride NOT to end. This book is so good, Sam. I really have enjoyed the first half of the book with you insight and thoughts as you traveled north into 1st world crazyness. I was having my wife read so many bits that she pulled it up on her Kindle and started reading it along with me. Thanks for another great read. This is a book everybody should read, riders or not. Tortillas to Totems made me want to head immediately south of the border. Cheers

Sam keeps you in the story like your riding it yourself, and it doesn't matter what you ride, this book will get better mileage. The only disappointment was the end of the book - I could have read on for years more. It's not just the adventure itself but the thought provoking introspective views that he shares throughout.

Very good reading entertainment for anyone looking to escape on an adventure and still has to go to work the next day. Sam and Brigit you guys rock!
