This is a good book for the beginner and even the seasoned expert that needs a refresher. Darl is an excellent author.
I bought the book for a course in college, and found it full of useful information and advice. Lacks advance stuff, but doesn't promise it anyway.

Pre-ordered and received the book yesterday. I have completed reading the chapter 22 "database troublsehooting" this morning. This chapter alone is worth buying this book. I am going to read it from cover to cover. Great refresher on things you already know plus learn some new features specific to 11g and higher(12c)!
This book doesn't concentrate on version 12c. The content itself is really elementary. For instance, the option "FLASHBACK ON" for the "CREATE TABLESPACE" is not even mentioned. Very little information is available about the performance aspects of the database administration. On the other hand, the chapter about the pluggable databases is excellent. It is, however, missing an example about un-plugging and re-plugging a database.This is a good book for a beginner who wants to get a overview of administration areas in Oracle but will not provide any version specific knowledge, which is what I was after, or provide any advanced DBA techniques.
This book puts you on the seat of a professional that knows his stuff. Reading it is the best way to gain experience in the new, all powerful Oracle 12c.
This book could be for Oracle 9,10,11 - The concepts are basically the same for any Oracle database - its too generic. Its not until chapter 23 - that they give you information on whatshould have been chapter 1 - Come on guys - we want to get a load of all the new exciting features up front - not some generic database knowledge -All in all - a waste of print - or in my case - download
I have read a lot of Oracle books in my life, some were written by known gurus in Oracle's space, and I can confidently say this one was really the best.This book narrows the gap between the theory and what is really going on in the real DBA job life. It describes what a DBA really faces in the real life and the best approach to handle the challenges he/she faces. You will find in this book the techniques that DBA learnt from experience and rarely found in a book or a learning material.Other points I really like on this book are: - it does not waste time writing unnecessarily theoretical stuff just to fill up some pages. It just hits the target and go on to the next, saving the valuable reader's time. - its language is easy and simple (good for those who's English isn't their first language, like me)I thank the author for providing his Oracle DBA knowledge gained from his extensive experience on this book.
