Of all the books of Michael P. Spradlin's that I have been privileged to read this is by far the best. The manner in which he draws you into the story is nothing short of brilliant. He begins by letting you see what led to Henry lying about his age in order to enlist in the Marines. You are further entwined in the lives of Gunny and Jams, Henry's or as he's called Tree. All of the stages of progression from entrenched soldiers to prisoners kept me turning page after page until the end. If I could give this more than a 5 star rating I would. Well done Michael, well done.
Bought this for my 4-th grade son, who likes historical fiction, especially about wars. HE LOVED THIS BOOK, and others by Michael Spradlin. Just the right level for him, and the main character is a 15-year old, so boys can identify with it. I read it, too, and also found it very well written and true to history.
Great book for my 10 year old. He really enjoyed this read....

Prisoner of War is about the war experience of a fictional young man named Henry “Tree†Forrest and his experiences as an extremely underage and impetuous serviceman imprisoned a Pacific POW camp during World War II. Henry makes friends with his commanding officer, Gunny, and some of the other POWs, and they go through the trials of being a POW for the entire war, trying as hard as they can to survive and fight back. The story is interesting, but it was a bit bland, nothing new in here. It was the oft-repeated story of the truly awful captors being eventually defeated by the righteous “little guy.†There was not much new here, but I do not know if it can ever be said too often that war sucks and that the military is not to be glorified, but respected. Tree was an emotional boy, and I found it hard to relate to him because he did not really have any other characteristics besides his impulsiveness and his over-selflessness. The other characters were all the same. I find it extremely hard to believe that not a single Allied soldier would have done anything treacherous, so the book makes the Japanese too villainous and the Allies too perfect. I do not think most young kids reading this would notice these problems because you would have to be reading quite analytically to notice these, so if your child likes war stories, he/she would probably like this, but if you don’t know, there are plenty of better stories like this out there.Nathan P, 15, Delaware Valley Mensa
Prisoner of War is based on the true story of America's youngest POW in World War II. At 15 years old, Henry Forrest lies about his age and joins the marines. Sent to the Philippines, his true age is uncovered and he is about to be sent home. Unfortunately for Henry, that day is the same day the Japanese invade the Philippines. Holding out for as long as they can, but finally forced to surrender, Henry must endure the Bataan death march and four years of brutal captivity.He is eventually sent to Japan and forced into labor at a steel mill. One of the great unknown tragedies of the the Pacific War is that US prisoners were forced to work in factories, mines and mills for companies that still exist today. These companies have gone on to make billions of dollars and have never offered or paid reparations to the men who suffered this fate, or their families.Prisoner of War is not an easy read. But is a powerful, well told story. Henry is tortured, starved and forced to endure hardships that many of us could not even imagine. But it is an important story. There are many good books on World War II for young readers (including the author's previous books The Enemy Above and Into the Killing Seas) but the story of POW's in the Pacific is rarely told. Reading this novel and seeing Henry 'dig deep' to survive, help others, and ultimately retain his humanity is a fascinating journey. One that is well worth taking.
Spradin's "heart" is in the right place and it is good to see a book on the prisoner of war experience written for this age group. But he made numerous technical and historical errors. The Marines (except for a couple of small units) were not on Bataan, Corregidor. Numerous errors with unit names - "15th Marines", "7th Artillery", "104th Tank Battalion", etc.The idea for the story was great - the author did list several authoritative books in his bibliography - unfortunately, I don't think he paid any attention to many facts.
