Great book which entirely lives up to the title. This book makes learning antibiotics a breeze. Antibiotics are some of the hardest drugs to learn, at least they were for me and I read through this book and felt much more confident going into my pharmacology exam. This book was only recommended for my course and I am glad I bought it and studied it. Easy to read and understand and it wasn't too terribly lengthy. The book is organized based upon classes of antibiotics and then goes into details on the specifics and what each is used to treat. It breaks the treatment into Great for, okay for and not good for so that you can sort of organize them in your head. Overall, great read and I feel that this book is a must have for any pharmacy class that requires and in depth knowledge of antibiotics.
I would highly recommend this book for medical students and resident physicians. I have been an attending physician for almost 15 years in academic medicine in various teaching hospitals. I have found that antibiotic knowledge and its translation into practice is challenging for medical students and resident physicians. Furthermore, available guides are too simplistic (tables)and do not help with the fundamentals. In depth articles on single antibiotics are too comphrehensive. This small book fills the current gap. It begins with describing the sterile world, overview of gram positive/gram negative bacteria. Then,the chapters cover a general approach to infectious diseases. What follows are chapters on each class of antibiotics (1 1/2 pages each). It also includes helpful appendices such as Selected Normal Flora near the end. In Summary, I would highly recommend this book. It is readable, short, but stresses important principles. In just a few hours, one can be well-versed on antibiotics.

I was hoping for dosing information as well, but that isn't included. The manual is a nice simplified didactic for a quick review. In other words, this is not a reference manual for on the job, but a review of functionality.
I read through the third edition and realized I was a fan. The fourth edition (this book) has a bit more color and is more applicable in today's practice. I like the fact that it now comes in a spiral. The book gives you information on drug classes and which pathogens are likely susceptible to them, as well as some other details about the drugs that are important to practice. I would recommend this book to pharmacists (or any healthcare professional) looking for a primer in ID.

I'm a pharmaceutical writer and needed a crash course in antibiotics. This book was ideal. Not overly technical but very comprehensive, it gave me an excellent background into antibiotic classes and drugs, including where and when they should be used, their benefits and shortcomings, and what drugs they can be combined with. Great starting point for understanding antibiotics without getting too heavily into chemical formulations and other specifics you can get later.
